Lapis Lazuli is a celestial deep-blue semi-precious stone. It has been prized since antiquity for its intense color and spiritual virtues.
There are many references to Lazuli in the Old Testament of the Bible and in ancient Egypt the walls of Tutankhamun's Tomb were bedded with Lapis Lazuli with the deep blue lines of his mask featuring it's distinctive hue also. The Egyptians revered Lapis as symbol of the night sky, a connection to the gods.
Artist Micahelagelo famously used ground Lapis Lazuli to create the ultramine colour of the skies in the sistine chapel. The first blue to hold its colour it was called ' a blue more precious than gold'
Many renaissance artists used Lapis Lazuli to create the shimmering blue of Virgin Mary's robes and some of the most famous portraits we still see today.
